What: Tectonic plates are part of the outer layer of the earth the way icing coats a cake. The outer layer of the earth is somewhat like stale icing, in that the outer icing layer is cooling and drying out. When this occurs, the outer layer cracks and comes apart. The linked cake-cookies approximates what tectonic plates look like.
